Among the Lega (also called Rega or Warega), in eastern Congo, the Bwami society presides over the tribe’s social life (with six ranks for men and three ranks for women). External signs of the Bwami society are objects made of ivory and wood, as well as masks: small masks (‘Lukwakongo’) serve as a form of ‘identification’ and indication of rank for the members of the society. These masks are not worn on the face. Masks of larger size, such as the present one, are reserved for the male members of the two highest ranks of the Bwami society ('Yananio' and 'Kindi'). They are worn in ritual ceremonies (such as initiations, funerals et al.). The present face mask of the ‘Idimu’ type is carved in light-coloured wood and dyed dark brown. It displays the characteristic style of the Lega: oval, long shape, a heart-shaped face, so-called 'coffee bean eyes', a long delicate nose and a small, open mouth. Incised scarification marks are visible on the forehead and cheeks, as well old remains of early colouring with white kaolin around the eyes. Originally, a 'beard' of plant fibres was attached to the seven holes all around the chin of the mask (as is visible on the grounds of the lighter colouring of some areas).
